Tando Muhammad Khan, Pakistan: A three-week free orthopedic surgery camp held at Indus Medical College Hospital in Tando Muhammad Khan provided life-changing treatment to hundreds of children with congenital disabilities and orthopedic disorders.
The medical camp took place from January 5 to January 25 and focused on providing surgical care to children suffering from birth deformities and other bone-related conditions. A team of internationally experienced orthopedic surgeons — including Dr. Amjad Gulzar Shaikh (UK-based orthopedic surgeon), Dr. Shah Bux Lashari, and Dr. Waheed Akbarfrom the United States — participated in the initiative.
During the camp, surgeons successfully performed 319 operations on children with physical disabilities, many of whom had limited access to specialized surgical care in their region.
Following surgery, patients were enrolled in a structured rehabilitation program. This included physiotherapy sessions, three months of follow-up medical care, and orthopedic support devices to aid recovery and improve mobility.
The rehabilitation support was provided by the team from the Shaikh Fazal Elahi Artificial Limbs & Rehab Center, a nonprofit initiative that offers orthotic and prosthetic services free of cost to people with disabilities in Pakistan. The center operates under the supervision of Dr. Amjad Gulzar Shaikh and focuses on restoring mobility and independence through modern assistive technologies and rehabilitation services.
Located on the Hyderabad–Badin Road in Sindh, Indus Medical College Hospital is a large tertiary-care teaching hospital equipped with modern diagnostic and surgical facilities, including trauma and orthopedic units, intensive care services, and a physiotherapy department that supports post-operative rehabilitation.
Medical organizers said the initiative aimed to bring specialized orthopedic care to underserved communities, enabling children with mobility impairments to regain function and lead more independent lives.
