ISLAMABAD – A major national effort has been launched to tackle one of Pakistan’s most urgent yet overlooked health challenges: preventable lower-limb amputations, particularly those linked to diabetes. The initiative is being led by Mr. Kamran Saleem Awan, a UK-registered prosthetist and orthotist with more than two decades of global clinical experience.
Mr. Awan, certified by Germany’s Ottobock and known for his expertise in diabetic footcare, limb preservation, and prosthetic rehabilitation, is setting out on a structured national training and speaking outreach. His goal is simple yet ambitious — to empower Pakistani clinicians with the skills needed to reduce avoidable limb loss.
“I am excited to begin a more structured speaking and training outreach,” Awan said, emphasizing collaboration with hospitals, medical societies, and professional forums to build sustainable, long-term footcare capacity within Pakistan’s healthcare system.
The campaign begins with a foundational workshop titled “Amputation Prevention and Footcare Management”, scheduled for Sunday, 14 December 2025, at the Mövenpick Hotel (Centaurus complex), Islamabad. The two-hour session, from 9:30 AM to 11:30 AM, is designed to equip healthcare providers with practical, evidence-based methods that align with international standards but are contextualized for Pakistan’s realities.
Mr. Awan aims to lay the groundwork for a “reliable, scalable, and clinically sound footcare model” that can be adopted by OPDs, hospitals, and community health centers nationwide. His work includes not only advanced prosthetic rehabilitation but also the development of specialized hospital footcare clinics — a critical component in reducing diabetic complications.

Diabetes remains one of the leading causes of amputations in Pakistan, with thousands of individuals losing limbs each year due to late diagnosis, inadequate footcare, and limited preventive services. This initiative seeks to reverse that trend by focusing on prevention, early detection, and timely, evidence-based intervention.
“This is just the beginning of a broader national strategy,” Awan noted, extending an open invitation for collaboration. “If your organization, hospital, or medical society is working to strengthen diabetes care, limb preservation, or rehabilitation services, I would be glad to contribute.”
