BS Prosthetics and Orthotics Students Gain Practical Experience in Foot Orthoses Assessment and Casting
First-semester students of the BS Prosthetics and Orthotics program at the Institute of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (IPMR), Khyber Medical University (KMU), recently participated in a practical training session focused on Foot Orthoses (FO) assessment and casting.
The session commenced with a comprehensive foot assessment using the Foot Posture Index (FPI), conducted by Mr. Farhan Shah. Students were introduced to the principles of evaluating foot posture through systematic assessment of multiple anatomical segments. The practical exercise enhanced their understanding of foot alignment and its clinical significance in orthotic practice.
Following the assessment, students progressed to the foot orthosis casting component of the session. Under close supervision, they practiced correct patient positioning, maintained appropriate foot alignment, and applied casting techniques used to obtain accurate negative casts for custom foot orthoses.
The hands-on training provided students with valuable clinical experience while reinforcing the theoretical concepts taught during the first semester. Developing competency in assessment and casting is a fundamental step in preparing future orthotists and prosthetists for evidence-based clinical practice and the fabrication of custom orthotic devices.
Such practical sessions reflect IPMR-KMU’s commitment to integrating classroom learning with clinical skill development, ensuring graduates are equipped with the knowledge and hands-on experience required in modern orthotic and prosthetic practice.
