And, most of the time, the reply is NO. That is obvious because the remoulding of the AFO over orthotic ankle joint is not possible. In articulated AFO, the ankle is mobile to adapt the positions during gait cycle. Thus, any option for this conversion must be strong, stable and accommodative. Simple placement of any orthotic ankle joint over the SAFO is not practical. In case, the available SAFO is good in fitting and size. Changing AFO is not the solution because it doubles the time and manufacturing cost.

For my pediatric patients, I mostly prefer to use the tamarack flexion joints due to its self co-align nature. Just for your information, Tamarack Flexure Joint® is world-renowned orthotic joints due to its strength, durability and ease of fabrication for orthosis. The structure of durometer polyurethane over the unique high strength inner filament core prevents elongation by ensuring precise hinging action and self co-alignment to the medial and lateral joint axes. The joints are available with free motion and dorsiflexion assist options in different sizes.

The manufacturers of Tamarack Flexure Joints came up with a unique idea of – Tamarack Flexure Joint Caps. These are external mounting perfectly shaped cavities, which encapsulate the tamarack flexure joint between the caps and AFO shell. Amazingly, the fit is perfect for maximizing the joint performance and the clinical outcomes with free motion and dorsiflexion assist tamarack flexure joints. These can work well with thermoplastic, carbon fibre, Arizona Style and metal/leather system. The placement is easy and not much time consuming. Only thing to be careful is the right placement and cutting of the orthosis. It is better to use guiding template for the placement of cups and cutting.

Courtesy : Tamarack Habilitation Technologies Inc.

This is one easy way to convert the SAFO into Articulated AFO.
