How to convert a Solid AFO into Articulated AFO?
Almost every orthotist finds a situation where he/she asked to convert a solid Ankle foot orthosis into an articulated Customized AFO. And, most of the time, the reply is NO. That is obvious because the remoulding of the AFO over orthotic ankle joint is not possible. In articulated AFO, the ankle is mobile to adapt the positions during gait cycle. Thus, any option for this conversion must be strong, stable and accommodative. Simple placement of any orthotic ankle joint over the SAFO is not practical. In case, the available SAFO is good in fitting and size. Changing AFO is not the solution because it doubles the time and manufacturing cost.
For my pediatric patients, I mostly prefer to use the tamarack flexion joints due to its self co-align nature.
