Five-year-old Mir Bayyaan Baloch was born without his right hand, but thanks to the determination of his father and the support of those dedicated to improving lives through 3D printing, he now has the ability to do everything other children his age can do. 

How 3D prosthetics change lives in Pakistan

KARACHI: Two weeks ago, Shabana moved her hand for the first time since her accident. Where there were once amputated fingers, she now has a new, albeit bulky hand made of synthetic material. Designed to her body's measurements, and with no electronic elements, Shabana's artificial hand is among the first 3D printed prosthetics in Pakistan.

The project began with an unlikely meeting: Dr Hassan Zahid had recently moved back from Turkey when he ran into his neighbour, Rabi Imran, a 22-year-old working as an engineer at the time.

ILALO, ECUADOR:  An Ecuadoran who lost both his feet is aiming to become the first climber to scale the world's toughest mountain, K2, with artificial limbs and without oxygen supplies.Santiago Quintero had half of each foot amputated for frostbite after climbing Aconcagua in Argentina in 2002. But that has not stopped him."They told me I would never climb 5,000-meter mountains again," the smiling 41-year-old told AFP.

Assistive products right of disabled persons

MoU signed for Orthotics Prosthetic Services

A MoU has been already signed with Pakistan Institute of Prosthetic and Orthotic Sciences (PIPOS) Peshawar where poor patients of Fata, who lost their limbs in various incidents of terrorism including bomb blasts and IED explosions, would be provided artificial limbs free of cost to help bring them into normal life, he said, adding the Government would bear all expenses of such patients for which Rs60 millions were allocated.
